EnglishHints has a new course: 9 Days to Better English Pronunciation. It can help you improve your English pronunciation quickly, step by step. (It can make English spelling a little easier to understand, too-- though it can't make it easy!)
Do you need to speak English at work or to give presentations in English? Does it make you nervous? Even worse, do you wonder if people can understand your English well enough to follow your arguments and get your point?
Here's a little of what you'll learn in the course:
You'll hear and repeat the common sounds for each letter in English. You'll learn which of the sounds are most likely for different letter combinations. The rules are imperfect-- but much better than nothing!
You'll practice pronouncing vocabulary useful for discussions with English-speaking colleagues or customers, and learn the proper stress for each word. You'll also practice many of them in work contexts. Some examples of these words:
You'll learn the difference between important homophones (words that sound the same but mean different things, and are often spelled differently.) These are words like hear and here or to, too, and two. Even English speakers make mistakes with them. It's important to catch those mistakes, though. They can cause confusion, or make you look uneducated.
Your confidence in speaking English will increase as people understand you better.
This course is for professionals who can read English at an intermediate level or above but want to improve their speaking ability.
If you are still studying basic English, it's not for you (yet.)
If you use English at work, at least part of the time, but don't feel comfortable with your pronunciation, this course is for you.
If your English pronunciation is good enough to get by, but you still want to improve it, it's for you too.
9 Days to Better English Pronunciation has three modules that help you practice word stress, vowel and consonant sounds, and much more.
The welcome module has an introductory lesson on general pronunciation, intonation, and syllable stress
Module 1 has four lessons on key vocabulary and the vowel sounds of English (short long, & several 'other'). It also teaches the silent 'E' rule and other rules that can help you recognize which sound is most likely.
One lesson includes a short recording of you reading sentences with different sounds. I will review the recording and make some suggestions for personalized improvement.)
Module 2 has four more lessons:
The lessons are mostly brief videos and practice exercises, with a couple of quizzes as well. After each module there is a survey to let me know how I can improve the lessons. If you need more practice, I will add it if I can.
The most important practice of all, of course, is repeating the sounds of each word or letter. For that reason, each lesson also has an audio recording you can listen to (and repeat) as often as needed.
You can contact me by email or by message board on the site if you have any questions or problems. If it's about pronunciation, we might get on a quick Zoom call if needed, so you can hear the answer.
